Parenting One Day at a Time
Are you a parent or caregiver of a child under age 18? Are you in recovery from a Substance Use Disorder? Whatever your situation, this class can provide information and support for your parenting journey. Parenting One Day at a Time offers you an opportunity to discuss your concerns in a supportive setting, ask questions and get answers to their parenting questions, and move forward in recovery as nurturing parents. The class has four sessions; classes are 90 minutes for a total of 6 hours of instruction time:
· What is Parenting? In this session, we discuss the role of a parent and what it means to be a parent in recovery. We also talk about the four styles of parenting, how parents develop a style based on their childhood experiences and how each style affects the parent/child relationship.
· Communication Do’s and Don’ts: This class provides you with suggestions for answering children’s questions so you can have open discussions about important topics. We will also discuss relationships with the other parent and extended family who may have difficulty trusting the newly recovering parent.
· Why Can’t I Discipline My Kid? Some parents in recovery find it difficult to set limits on children’s behavior because they feel guilty about their past substance use and its impact on their children. In this session, we talk about why discipline is challenging and examine some ways to manage misbehavior in age-appropriate ways while building a relationship with your child.
· Second Chances: If a parent has been absent for long periods of time, they often feel want to “make up for lost time” and create a bond with their children. This session offers a chance to discuss ways of establishing relationships with children, and other family members, in recovery. A handbook of useful suggestions and resources will be provided to parents.
